Welcome
Welcome to Year 4 from the Team; Androulla Kyriacou – Russell Square teacher; Tom Smith – Euston Square teacher; and Layla Mepham– Leicester Square teacher. We look forward to welcoming Charlotte D’Arcy in late October when she will be taking over to cover Layla’s maternity leave. The children have settled brilliantly into Year 4 and it has been great to see them enjoying being back at school. We are sorry that we are not able to meet you properly in our usual Meet the Teacher meetings but we hope you find the information below useful, and please see our class videos at the bottom of this page.
Communication
Now more than ever, it is vital that the school office has current and up-to-date contact details (phone numbers and email addresses). Please contact them if your details have changed.
Normally, we pride ourselves on our open door policy, but unfortunately current circumstances make this very difficult. Instead, if you need to speak to your child’s class teacher, you can either contact the office and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Alternatively, you could email us using the following email addresses:
Start of the day begins at 9:05. Please ensure that you only use entrance 1, which is the main entrance of the school. Children should be encouraged to make their own way to the Year 4 waiting area which is in the ball court.
The day finishes at 3:35pm. Please use the same entrance and wait for your children in front of the astro-turf in the ball court. Exit again via the main gate. A polite reminder that all parents/carers involved in drop off or pick up should wear a mask on the school premises at all times.
If your child has a younger sibling you should enter via their designated entrance and send your older child to their waiting area.
General Class Housekeeping
PE, Art and Spanish will be continuing in year 4 and all of these subjects will be on a Friday. Please ensure your child comes to school on Fridays wearing their PE kit.
It is important that your child brings their own named water bottle to school each day. They are encouraged to also bring a fruit snack for break-time. Please avoid bringing in a bag wherever possible. A suggested alternative is a draw string bag or plastic bag which can be stored easily in your child’s tray.
The school is still reviewing the best way to manage homework during the current situation. Please look out for more information in the coming weeks when we will be able to share more details.
Curriculum
The children have enjoyed the planned PSHE recovery curriculum and we are now working towards teaching our usual broad and balanced curriculum. Please see the curriculum pages for more details about Year 4 coverage.
Reading
Children are encouraged to take books from our class book corners and are able to take these books home. Please ensure these books are returned so that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the books in our book corners.
This year, when a book is returned, the children will place the book in a ‘quarantine box’ kept in the classroom. All books will be quarantined for a minimum of 48 hours over the weekend before they are returned to the book corner.
Assessments
To get a more informed understanding of where the children are in their learning the school have decided to undertake some additional informal assessment which will help to shape our planning.
Parents Evening
The first parents’ evening is scheduled for November. Here you will be able to meet with your child’s class teacher to discuss how your little one is settling into the year. The school is considering how this meeting can be safely managed, and will keep you informed of the exact dates and details nearer the time. We look forward to meeting with you individually!
Year Group Specific
Year 4s are in the fortunate position to be receiving Whole Class Instrument Tuition (WCIT). This will be starting later this half-term, most likely by the week commencing 28th September. Russell Square and Euston Square will be learning either trumpet or clarinet on Monday or Thursday. Leicester Square will be learning the violin on a Wednesday. Further details on arrangements for WCIT will be shared with you soon.
Due to pressures on the curriculum timetable and issues with access, unfortunately swimming will not be available to the Year 4’s this year. Your children will however have the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons in Year 5.
Year 4 will be continuing to run the Daily Mile most days. For your child’s comfort and safety, please ensure that they are wearing appropriate footwear, preferably trainers.
Story time is something we do a lot with the children at school, so we really encourage you to keep reading books at home. Children can also listen to stories online, which can help support them in their daily reading:
Last year for World Book Day, Rob Biddulph, an author and illustrator, visited Bounds Green and did an amazing workshop for our key stage one children. He is doing really amazing online art activities for children. Click the link below:
