In Bounds Green we believe that Music is a vital part of the children’s education and we offer a rich and varied curriculum to aid learning academically, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Music is used to unite the school, bringing children together from many different walks of life, creating a platform to celebrate these differences.
Bounds Green offers all pupils the opportunity to sing/perform in a year group performance every year (Christmas performances, Year 5 Summer production and Year 6 End of Year performance). By sharing performances with different year groups, our governors and parents, it gives our children a sense of purpose and achievement.
Each class from Year 1 to Year 6 has a weekly singing assembly lasting for 30 minutes, providing children with the opportunity to listen, to sing, compose and perform music both individually and in groups. The weekly singing assemblies are delivered by specialist music teacher Elena Browne.
As well as this children from year 2 to year 6 have weekly music lessons with Elena where they learn lots of new songs from different musical genres and a range of countries. Here children appreciate the music, look at notation; compose their own notations and songs in groups as well as having performance opportunities.
Children from years 1 to 6 have a chance to perform on a wide range of tuned and un-tuned percussion drums under the specialist provision of Toby Davies. Each year group performs some world music, including African drumming and Samba. Parents are welcome to come and watch their children perform; dates are listed in the newsletter. Currently in year 4, Haringey offers whole class instrument teaching for Guitar, Clarinet or Trumpet. Children can carry on learning their instrument in Year 5 within a small ensemble.
Individual Music Instrumental Tuition
One to one music tuition on a variety of instruments is available for children at Bounds Green during the school day. Lessons are held in our afterschool club room, but are provided through Haringey Council. Parents who wish to enrol their child in the music program should contact the Haringey Music Service (HMS). Apply early, as waiting lists are common for most instruments. Click here to reach their web page.
